Parents’ Assocation

Welcome to the Castleknock National School Parents Association Page.

We are an active group supporting our students, parents and staff to enrich the educational and social experience in our school community. This page will explain our purpose, who we are, how you can get in touch and involved and what you can expect from this school year.

PURPOSE

The purpose of CNS PA, as outlined in our school constitution, is a structure whereby parents and guardians of students at CNS work together to improve the overall educational experience of our students. We work in partnership with school staff and the Board of Management and each year, our children benefit from new activities after and during school hours.

If you would like a copy of our constitution, please let one of the committee members know, or email us at parentsassociationCNS@gmail.com.

EXTERNAL SPEAKER – Supporting our Children’s Mental Health & Wellbeing

To support the school’s policy on Health and Wellbeing Promotion and in line with the schools “Friends for Life” programme, the PA have invited a guest speaker from the National Parent’s Council to speak on a topic of keen interest to many of us, parents and sta alike. The talk entitled “Supporting Parents to Support their Children’s Mental Health and Wellbeing”, covers how to build and nurture resilience within our own child and provides tips on how best to support our children’s positive mental health and well being. The talk will be held on 26th October in our school GP room at 7.15pm. There is no charge for this event. Tea and co ee will be provided and we really hope to see you there for this really save the date… engaging topic.

cake and coffee The PA would like to invite you to a cake and co ee morning to be held in the parish hall on 28th October from 8.30am. We hope to see as many parents as possible to enjoy a relaxing chat and a delicious well deserved slice of cake before the Halloween break.

Fundraising update

Thank you so much to our parents and sta who joined us for a terrifi c end of year celebration in Luttrellstown Castle. It was a really successful evening and was very well attended. Thank you! Funds raised have supported the purchase of the remaining three sound systems in our school. This means that each teacher in our school is equipped with their own personal microphone. This allows students to hear clearly no matter where they are in the classroom. We have had very positive feedback from teachers and students alike. The focus for PA fundraising for 2016/17 is supporting our literacy drive within CNS. This means all our students throughout the years can benefi t from additional materials specifi c to their needs.

SWIMMING

Swimming has proven to be a consistently popular after school activity and it is great to see the progress of our swimmers through their levels. Swimming is now closed for any new registrations. Our winter swimming term will run for 12 weeks beginning 7th Nov to 12th Dec and restart 9th Jan-13th Feb. It will run at a di erent time due to Coolmine school using the pool. The winter term time will be 2.55-3.30pm. Registration forms for the new term will be in school bags on 16th October. Places will be allocated on a fi rst come, fi rst served basis with completed forms including payment.

FRENCH

Our native French speaker, Sabine, joins Castleknock National School, for a new term of French vocabulary and games in this interactive class. The term begins on 5th October and lasts for 8 weeks. ALOHA MENTAL ARITHMETIC Through didactic games and memory exercises, our students will put their photographic numerical skills to the test with Aloha Mental arithmetic, beginning on 5th October for 8 weeks.

DRAMA

Aoife, our external Drama teacher, returns this year to put on three Christmas productions for us all to enjoy. First, Third and Fifth class are already participating in Drama classes and we look forward to their performances before Christmas. Envelopes will go out in bags next week. Please pay drama fees as soon as possible. Thank you. Registration All our students participate in drama and many other activities as these are held during school hours. However, for our Swimming, French and Aloha Maths activities, places are allocated on a first come, first served basis once registration forms and payment are submitted. We must abide by teacher number recommendations and child safety policies. If your child is participating in after school PA activities, please be prompt on collection. Thank you for your understanding.

WHAT ACTIVITIES DO THE PA MANAGE?

In terms of after school enrichment activities, we organise swimming, French and Maths (from October) available to our students, in addition to the many other activities on offer to them. During school hours, in the past we have been able to organise scientists, musicians, mathematicians, the Planetarium and Niall de Burca, Irish Storyteller extraordinaire as part of our children’s school life. Niall de Burca has had such tremendous feedback that he is already booked in again for this year! Drama plays a key role in our students lives and we manage drama payment and of course, the much awaited plays, where each child will have a chance to perform.

Each year, we look for guidance from the school as to where staff and parents would like to see additional experiences introduced, so each member of our school community can benefit.

We also run school social events which play an equally important role in our school community. Student’s get to enjoy pancake day, dress up day, Easter treats, the annual school disco and much, much more.

Parents and staff are not forgotten and the social side begins with tea and tissues on the first day and moves swiftly to social evenings, such as quiz nights and dinner and dancing. Once again, this year we are eager to continue from last year’s success and plans are already underway. Watch this space!

Finally, there is a fundraising element to our activities. Last year, thanks to the help of our school community, we were able to assist in the purchasing of individual microphones for every class teacher. This makes it easier for students to hear the teacher no matter where they are sitting and passes the message along very quickly. We have had great feedback from teachers and students alike.
